World Belly Dance Day, Cape Town, 2018, 10th Anniversary Edition
Belly Dancing has wide appeal due to the body positive nature of the dance. Bodies of all shapes and sizes are celebrated for their ability to master movements and techniques, rather than for meeting society’s physical ideals. As women, we are subjected to unrealistic, photo shopped images of what we are expected to look like and belly dancing is a safe space to get to know your body and interact with other women without judgment and fear of criticism.
Approximately 200 belly dancers from studios across Cape Town will be performing at World Belly Dance Day on the 12th May. Dancers range in age from 5 to 65 and come from a variety of different backgrounds. They all share a love of the dance and a willingness to unite as a community in celebration of their art form.
This year we celebrate our 10th anniversary with the filming of the belly dance inspired documentary, This Side Of Fabulous, which will capture the magic of World Belly Dance Day live.
There are approx. 30 belly dance studios in the Western Cape and 22 of them will be participating in World Belly Dance Day this year.
Doors open at 10:30 am and the days events will include performances from beginners through to professional performers, and will showcase a variety of styles, from traditional folk, classical Oriental dance through to American Tribal Style and Tribal Fusion.
Vendors will trade throughout the day, selling everything from specialty coffees and juices to shawarmas, halfmoons, chili bites and sweet treats.
There will be a variety of belly dance related goods on sale, from full costumes, veils and props, to assorted jewellery, body products and and candles.
At 1:30pm we invite belly dancers and spectators alike to join in on a quick belly dance lesson and group performance, which is one of the highlights of the day.
All proceeds raised on the day will be donated to Rape Crisis, Cape Town Trust. World Belly Dance Day was started specifically with the intention of uniting belly dancers around the world for a good cause, and with the high incidence of violence against women and children in South Africa, we selected Rape Crisis as our beneficiary. Over the last 10 years, World Belly Dance Day, Cape Town, has donated over R120 000 to Rape Crisis and other charities.
